COM1 – Communications 1

Communications, Level 1

This is a communication exam that will test your practical knowledge and require you to recall and decipher messages and communications using international code flags.

The exam is multiple-choice and is divided into two parts:

Part 1: Allows the use three publications: -International Code of Signals -Radio Aids to Marine Navigation-Annual Edition of Notices to Mariners. These will be used to decipher encoded signals

Part 2 : Is all recall. You will be required to memorize the single letter meaning of each flag and be able to identify both the alphabetic and numeric code flags, and distress signals associated with them

A basic knowledge of how to navigate through the three publications allotted in the exam room will be required

Recommended Reading:

American Merchant Seaman’s Manual This is a book that we recommend as a general reference for the professional mariner. It includes almost all of the information you will need to study for this exam, including signal flags, flag signaling procedure (single, two & three letter signals) and flashing light signaling. This book is highly recommended as a reference resource for aspiring and current professional mariners.
